Files are an optional collectable found in Slaughter Me Street: 1999.

Appearances[]

Slaughter Me Street: 1999[]

The Files Debuted in the full release of Slaughter Me Street: 1999. There are a total of 40 files found through out the five levels in Normal mode, and while entirely optional provide the larger story and the background to the Slaughter Me Street world. Although there are two main "stories" that are present in almost every level (The Investigator's Log and Tim's Journal), there are also files that detail incidents either through manuals or by other minor characters. There are also two Achievements for getting 5 files and all 40 files called Novice Investigator and Professional Investigator respectively.

The Locations of each File can be found in almost every notable area of the level's map (For example, In The House there's one in the Workshop and in the Forest there's one by a statue). They are manila folders with a red label or stamp on them. Unlike the Relics, Exits, Batteries and Tokens, they do not emit any light themselves, regardless of if the Flashlight is on or not. There's only a certain amount on each map, 10 in The House, 6 in The Forest, 7 in The Streets, 7 in The Studio, and 10 in the Inferno. Once collected, the specific file the player picked up will no longer spawn in the level. It should be noted that the player does not have to beat the level itself in order to keep the file, as once the player picks up the file, they can access it any time from the game's menu. Like other optional collectables, picking one up during Pre-Game will not trigger a phase change.

Messages[]

The House[]

A Woman heard distressing screams emanating from her neighbor's house at approximately 10:25 PM tonight. According to her, the screams sounded like that of a young girl, which she believes to be her neighbor's daughter. According to the caller, her neighbor had been acting erratic lately, and she's concerned for the little girl's safety.

— Investigator's Log #1
I've arrived at the house that the screaming allegedly originated from, only to find the front door wide open. As such, I've invited myself in, and it seems as though nobody is home.

There are signs of a struggle in the kitchen, leading upstairs to what appears to be a little girl's bedroom. I'll need to investigate further.

— Investigator's Log #2
For a Child's Bedroom it's surprisingly clean, with very few toys in sight. I've spoken with neighbors, and apparently the little girl who lives here could be often seen carrying a green rabbit doll around with her. Since it's not present in the room, perhaps there's still hope to find her.

I've also found a game console in this room, despite the lack of a TV. According to one of the officers with me, the game inserted into it is based on a recent horror movie that used puppets for the monsters, and it is not set to be released for another month or so. Underneath the console was a page from what appears to be a man's personal diary. It doesn't contain anything of interest, but I'll hold onto it regaurdless.

— Investigator's Log #3
I've discovered an interesting-looking room in the basement. It appears to be a workshop, in which the homeowner created puppets and costumes. I think I recognize some of the designs here from a TV show, but it's hard to say given the state they're in.

More Importantly, I think I figured out the cause of the screaming. On the floor, I've found a crowbar with traces of blood on either end of the tool. It appears to have been washed rather thoroughly.

— Investigator's Log #4
It feels like the more I investigate this house, the bigger it gets. I get that it's on the richer side of town, but a Bunker? We don't even get that bad of storms around here, why did he need this?

Seems like it leads into the woods, out by the river. I've found some prints leading in that direction, so it's safe to assume our suspect is headed that way, possibly with the missing girl. That said, something about the prints seems...off.

— Investigator's Log #5
I visited Dr.Hancock today. He told me to try writing in a journal to alleviate some of the stress I've been dealing with lately. Well. Here you go doc. I'm...not sure what to write about. Our landlord finally came by and fixed the door today. He had a really crappy attitude about it, as per usual, but at least it's fixed.

I really need this show to take off. I can't keep her in these conditions.

— Tim's Journal #1
I Finished the first costume for the show today. A yellow dragon. I decided to call him Walter the Wyvern. I accidently made his legs a little short, but that's alright. I won't be the one operating him, if things go our way.

— Tim's Journal #2
That bastard Isaiah rejected the show. They don't know how hard I've worked. How much I've sacrificed for this. I can't take this anymore. I need this show to succeed. It HAS to succeed.

I can't let things go on like this. I WON'T let things go on like this.

— Tim's Journal #3
I found a strange looking book outside our apartment today. It's evidently an antique, probably belonging to one of my older neighbors. The cover is dark and leathery, and the book is full of bizarre markings. It had a note slid underneath the back cover.

"Make all your dreams come true". Could it be real?

— Tim's Journal #4
The Studio called back! Isaiah changed his mind and Happy Sun Studios is going to produce the show! That Book...it really worked! I can't believe it.

We'll be out of here soon. Bigger and brighter things ahead. I promise.

— Tim's Journal #5

The Forest[]

I lost track of the footprints somewhere around the campground. From the looks of the place, an entire family and then some were camping here and left all their stuff? On top of that, I found some concerning notes regarding the surrounding area along the way. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried.

What the hell happened here? Is it related to the missing girl? I found another one of her toys, at least I think. It's a dollhouse, with a few dried drops of blood on the roof.

— Investigator's Log #6
I never quite understood what this thing is. Apparently it's our town's local legend, like Bigfoot, or the Loch Ness monster, but...what is it? A giraffe? A dinosaur?

I found more strange tracks. Looks like they're heading into the city.

— Investigator's Log #7
I had a strange dream tonight. In it, I was laying in bed when a glowing pair of yellow eyes appeared through the window, peering into my soul. The creature the eyes belonged to seemed like it was trying to speak to me, but I couldn't understand what it was saying. At the end of the dream, a large blue goat-like entity and a lanky pink bird monster broke into my room.

A blue goat...a pink bird...I could make those work for the show.

— Tim's Journal #6
I've been having dreams about the yellow-eyed creature for weeks now. No, not dreams. Nightmares. It's made sleep difficult, but that's no stopping me. I'm too close to give up now.

We're almost done with the first episode of the show. I can't wait for people to see the fruits of my labor.

— Tim's Journal #7
The show is a hit! The higher ups at Happy Sun loved the pilot episode, and have greenlit an entire 26 episode season. I've worked so hard for this...it's about time it all paid off.

We're moving out of the apartment, starting today. Scored a deal on a really great house just out of town. I can't wait for her to see it.

— Tim's Journal #8
Charile

I'm leaving town, and I think you probably should too. When I got back to shore today, I found all the fish we caught the night before had been decapitated and scattered all over the shop. I'm not sure what the hell's happening, but after this, I ain't sticking around to find out. If you decide to stay, the shop is yours, keys are in their usual spot. Good luck, buddy.

— Fisherman's Note
Ross keeps complaining about crap movin' in the bushes while he's working. I told him he was hearin' things, but now I'm starting to think he was onto something. I swear I saw something lookin' at me in the woods today.

I found a ton of tracks leading into the warehouse today and they looked like massive friggin' bird feet. I'm putting in my two weeks today, to hell with this. I'd rather work at the S-Mart.

— Warehouse Worker's Note

The Street[]

I managed to get more info on our suspect. Appartently his name is Tim Denson, and he's responsible for the creation of a pretty big kid's show and the puppets for a few recent big budget films. He used to live in the old Suttermill Building shortly before it was abandoned, so I'll be checking there next.

— Investigator's Log #8
This place has really gone to hell since it was left to rot. It reeks of decay, and some of the apartments have completely started to collapse.

I don't actually remember what happened to get the place shut down. I wonder if it has anything to do with Tim.

— Investigator's Log #9
I found a bizarre book here, with some disturbing markings and illegible writing covering every single page. I noticed Tim's name written within it a few times, so it seems it belonged to him.

There are bloodstains on the window and leading down the fire escape. We're getting close.

— Investigator's Log #10
The yellow-eyed entity appeared to me in my dreams again. This time he was in my room, directly in front of me. A large, red bat-like creature covered in black marking and grimy wet horns. Unlike previous nights, the creature didn't speak. It just hovered there, staring at me for what felt like hours.

When the dream ended, I woke up exhausted, as if I hadn't actually slept at all. Perhaps Dr. Hancock will know what these dreams mean, if anything. Maybe they're just stress related, and the monsters in them look that way because of my work with puppets. Whatever the case, the creature's appearance has given me an idea for the show. A grumpy, annoying, insignificant little orange hand puppet named Gomez. If this recurring nightmare is going to torment me, I'm going to make a mockery of it.

— Tim's Journal #9
I keep blacking out on set while we're filming. One second I'll be watching actors, the next I'll be in my trailer staring at the wall. Apparently an accident happened on set today, and I need to remake Henry's costume. I don't remember anything. I don't even remember starting filming today.

I'm so tired...

— Tim's Journal #10
I seriously can't catch a damn break, can I? The nanny quit on me today, something about feeling unsafe in my house and seeing things moving in the yard. She's just paranoid. I don't have time to take care of her. I need to work.

I need to finish the Show.

— Tim's Journal #11

The Studio[]

We've tracked Tim down to the location where his show was filmed, "Happy Sun Studios". Upon arriving, some employees gave us the rundown on Tim and his past.

Apparently, during the filming of Tim's show, "Foggle Friends", the studio would often encounter strange technical issues. Lights flickering at strange times, audio equipment producing bizarre, droning noises, and even computers essentially acting on their own, opening/creating strange files that seem to contain nothing but nonsensical ramblings. Additionally throughout all of this, Tim could occasionally be seen retreating into one of the star trailers where he could be heard speaking to someone when there was nobody present, and when there were no phones for him to use.

— Investigator's Log #11
Just learned about a specific incident that occurred during the filming of "Foggle Friends", after I asked about one of the posters for it. Apparently during a scene that was set to introduce a new character named "Henry", the big brown elephant puppet operated by two individuals, the studio's Stage Switch System went off on its own. I guess according to some of the crew, this Stage Switch System is this big state of the art thing the studio installed to make filming faster, but it comes at a risk.

Neither of the actors in the Henry suit survived, and they ended up cutting that episode of the show. During the incident, Tim was found unconscious on the floor of his trailer.

— Investigator's Log #12
He's not here. He sent us on a wild goose chase. Nobody at the studio has seen Tim in over a week. Nobody knows where he might be. Everyone who does gives me a location I've already searched.

I'm not giving up. But I don't know where to go next. I'm going to go back to his house. Maybe I missed something.

— Investigator's Log #13
We're finally done filming the first season of Foggle Friends. I should be excited, but if anything I'm just relieved. I barely remember half of this show's production. I just want to go home and rest.

I just want to sleep.

— Tim's Journal #12
I'm being watched. No matter where I go, or what I'm doing. Something is watching me. I need to hide. I ordered a storm shelter to be built in the backyard today. Something is coming for me. I need to hide.

I need to hide.

— Tim's Journal #12
The Happy Sun Studious(TM) Stage Switch System is one of the key components in making sure the filming of our shows is as quick and efficient as possible, and as such it is critically important that you, our esteemed film crew, understand how it works. The Stage Switch System, as the name suggests, allows us at Happy Sun to quickly and effortlessly switch from one set location to another, without having to set up any additional equipment or move any heavy stages or props more than we need to!

Howwever, the Stage Switch can be extremely dangerous if used incorrectly. When moving the stages, any and all personnel should be evacuated from them first, to avoid serious bodily injury or death. The system utilizes a lot of moving metal parts, and those parts are extremely dangerous. Should an incident occur, please unplug the Stage Switch System, and then proceed to the basement where you may find the affected individuals' remains and conduct a very thorough cleaning of the machinery and set. Once the stages have been cleaned and inspected, operation may resume as normal, and local authorities may be notified of the incident.

1 2 3 Slaughter Me Street Wikia has a collection of images related to Files.

Trivia[]

  • Similar to how Batteries spawn, Multiple files can be found in a single place or area.
  • Unlike how most collectables in 1999 function, the Files have a set location and saves to the player when collected making them the only collectable to have this distinction.
  • The Files were all written sometime in September of 2024, roughly a month before the Slaughter Me Street: 1999 fully released.
  • Some of the files have spelling mistakes in them notably "Happy Stun Studios" (Found in Investigator's Log #11)
  • Most files have a loose association to where they're found, The only ones that don't follow this are the entries in Tim's Journal. For example the Investigator's Logs are written as if the Investigator was in the area as they typically point out specific oddities or state where they are. Other files such as the notes and Stage Switch Manual are inside or next to where the location is.
  • The Files are where the first official use of some of the Puppet's names can be seen outside of the Retro Series.
  • Out of the Files in the game, Tim's Journal takes up the most with 15 entries while the Investigator has 13. The others are one offs.
  • Almost all of the Demons and Puppets are mentioned directly in some compacity in the files.
    • Walter, Gomez and Henry are all referred to by name.
    • Nightmare, while not intentionally mentioned by name is mentioned and experiences including the demon were described as a "Nightmare".
    • Seeker, Stalker, Wollof, and Egret are mentioned through the files but not by name.
    • The Screamer is the only creature that is not directly referred too in any of the files.
  • Most of the Relics are mentioned directly in the files, primarily as the Investigator comes across them.
    • The only Relic that both Tim and the Investigator interacted with is the Summoning Tome.
    • The only Relic that is not mentioned directly is the Rocking Horse.
